Since 1970s when language learning strategies have gained popularity in research, different classifications of them have been proposed. Each of these classification systems involves a theory about the nature of language learning strategies and even about second language learning in general. However, the study done by Hsiao and Oxford (2002) showed that among the existing classification systems Oxford’s taxonomy, which is used in the present study, is the most consistent with learners’ strategy use. The next section presents Rubin’s (1981) taxonomy as well as those proposed by O’Malley and Chamot (1990) and Oxford (1990).
